It is said that behind every great athlete is a coach who helped him get there and the same could be said of coaches and mentors even outside the sporting world. Being a coach and a mentor is a selfless act and is all about paying it forward and influencing the lives of others.
One mentor who has made an impact in the lives of others both on and off the basketball court is Chot Reyes, the current head coach of the TNT KaTropa in the PBA. Reyes is a former head coach of Gilas Pilipinas, the former President and CEO of TV5 Network, Inc., and is an Executive Business Coach with plenty of experience as a mentor and corporate speaker.
Reyes considers mentorship “face-to-face leadership,” and calls it the “art of facilitating the performance, learning, and development of another person.” He identifies the importance of having good mentors influence you before you can become a mentor yourself, and that being a coach was his way of paying it forward to those who have influenced and helped him.
Reyes identified five important components of being a good mentor and coach in order to be able to make a difference in the lives of many people.
A. Accepting the responsibility of being a coach and mentor
B. Being brilliant at the basics
C. Coach not only the problem, but the person
D. Drill (Practice)
E. Experience
Reyes says that there is a need for future leaders. We cannot future-proof ourselves, but instead, need to be prepared for the future by creating and raising more leaders through effective coaching and mentorship. But above all else, he identifies that the most important thing about being a coach and mentor is their heart and that they should have the heart to help people become better versions of themselves.
